Montana Bison Association

The Montana Bison Association (MBA) is a not-for-profit association formed in 1999 comprised of bison producers and enthusiasts with a passion for this majestic animal. We are a member of the National Bison Association.  Please spend some time on our website to learn how we are restoring this iconic species to its native landscape.

  • We support local Montana producers and tie them into a national community bound by the heritage of the American bison.

  • Members receive exclusive benefits, including invitations to winter and summer ranch tours, voting privileges, advertisements on our marketplace, and annual conference attendance. But that’s not all. Learn more about becoming a member.

  • We operate to serve the public good rather than generate profit for shareholders.

Our mission

To gather, educate, and participate in the bison community by working together to ensure the healthy sustainability of our historic native bison.

We promote integrity by raising and managing bison sustainably and ethically for successful future generations while facilitating an opportunity for members to learn and assist one another.

Why eat bison?

  • Bison meat provides approximately 17 grams of protein per 4-ounce (113-gram) serving, supporting muscle growth and overall health.

  • It is a good source of B vitamins (B12, B6, and niacin), iron, selenium, and zinc, which are vital for energy production, immune function, and overall well-being.

  • Compared to beef, bison meat is leaner, containing fewer calories and less fat, making it a heart-healthy option.

  • Bison meat has a healthier fatty acid profile than beef, which may help reduce inflammation and lower the risk of vascular diseases.

  • Growth hormones are federally prohibited in bison, and antibiotics are used only when necessary for the animal's welfare, resulting in a more natural meat product.

  • Bison meat is praised for its sweet, tender taste, offering a flavorful alternative to other red meats.

Why raise bison?

  • Bison have evolved over thousands of years to thrive in Montana's environment, making them well-suited to the local climate and terrain.

  • Bison are hardy animals that breed and calve on their own, requiring minimal human intervention. Their thick coats protect them from harsh weather, eliminating the need for shelter during winter storms.

  • As megaherbivores, bison contribute to landscape diversity through grazing, trampling, and wallowing behaviors. These activities support the health of riparian areas and promote the restoration of plant and bird life.

  • Bison are efficient utilizers of feed, which can lead to more sustainable pasture management compared to other livestock species.

  • Bison meat is lean, nutritious, and increasingly popular among consumers, providing ranchers with a profitable market. Additionally, bison ranching can attract tourism, offering educational and recreational opportunities.

Why support bison restoration?

  • Historic Recovery

Bison populations were once nearly wiped out, dropping below 1,000 animals. Today, through conservation and private stewardship, their numbers have rebounded to over 400,000 across North America.

  • Ecological Benefits

Bison play a crucial role in maintaining healthy landscapes. Their grazing patterns help regenerate grasslands, promote biodiversity, and support overall ecosystem health.

  • Sustainable Agriculture

While 90% of bison are raised on private lands, ranchers strive to mimic natural processes, ensuring responsible livestock management that benefits both the environment and the economy.

  • Cultural Significance

Recognized as the first-ever National Mammal of the U.S. in 2016, bison restoration efforts reflect a commitment to preserving an iconic species that holds deep historical and cultural value, particularly for Indigenous communities.
